A new flood-lit third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch was officially opened at Birches Head Academy on Thursday 28 September 2023 and is set to support pupils, the local and wider community.

The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on the new 3G pitch, where special guests and VIPs were invited to celebrate to mark the event.

The grand opening commenced with a football tournament between pupils on the new pitch. Guests were greeted with a ‘hand-pan’ musical performance as they arrived to mark the start of the ceremony. The ceremony opened with a welcome from Principal, Ms Katie Dixon who was joined by pupils from the Leadership Team.

Special guest speaker, Lou Macari then addressed the audience with a personal reflection on the importance of sport and how the opening of the 3G facilities will bring increased opportunities for participation for the pupils and the community.

Lou Macari is a Scottish former footballer and manager. Lou began his playing career at Celtic. He is best known for his time at Manchester United, where he played over 400 games. He helped them win promotion back to the First Division and then played in their FA Cup win of 1977. In 1991, Macari was appointed manager at Stoke City. Stoke at the time had just finished in their lowest league position and Macari had the task to turn around the fortunes of the club.

Principal at Birches Head Academy, Ms Katie Dixon commented: “It’s been incredible to watch this major project come to fruition. The new facility, located on the school’s playing field, will be key a investment in supporting the pupils at Birches Head Academy, as well as grassroots sports in the local community and beyond.
