Consistency Across the Academy

We have developed a very clear set of expectations at BHA known as: Consistency Across the Academy which aims to outline “the way we do things” (the BHA way) in our community. The aim is a very simple one:

Our “Consistency Across the Academy” ensures that there are clear and consistent high expectations regarding routines and behaviour and that this is centered around always establishing a positive safe working environment which enable teachers to teach and students to learn.

We expect staff to prepare lessons that are well planned, sequenced, organised, informative and engaging. We expect students to come to school prepared to learn and to engage with their learning positively and respectfully. Teachers will have very high expectations of their students.

There are four strands to our ‘Consistency Across the Academy’ approach to learning which outline our expectations regarding behaviour routines before during and after lessons in Academy. All staff and students are expected to follow these ensuring that a consistent, clearly understood approach to learning takes place.

Academy Rules – this outlines how we ensure that all pupils learn in a calm, safe and supportive environment.

  • All staff ensure a calm atmosphere around the building
  • Movement around the Academy
  • Our Academy etiquette
  • Encouraging respectful behaviour

At the Start of Every Lesson – these detail the expectations of rules that all staff should insist upon at the beginning of the lesson.

  • Establishing the teacher student relationship
  • Setting the tone for learning
  • All students ready for learning
  • Introduce the learning

During Every Lesson – this incorporates our expectations of Teaching and Learning

  • Effective teaching and the lesson progresses
  • Celebrate success
  • Address interruptions to learning

As Every Lesson Concludes – these details the expectations that all staff should insist upon at the end of the lesson, including the exit arrangements for pupils.

  • Revisit and review learning
  • Ensuring readiness to continue learning
  • End lesson in an orderly dismissal

All of our classrooms will display the CATA poster version and STEPS and SLANT. All staff will follow this and will remind students by referring to it regularly.
